Bamboo Rayon

Bamboo rayon, also called bamboo viscose, is produced by chemically dissolving bamboo pulp using the same viscose process as traditional rayon, involving sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. Despite bamboo's reputation as a sustainable fast-growing crop, the chemical processing negates many environmental benefits and creates the same worker safety and pollution concerns as wood-pulp rayon. The resulting fiber is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking with natural antimicrobial properties attributed to the bamboo source, though these claims are debated since the harsh chemical process may eliminate bamboo's original characteristics. Bamboo rayon is heavily marketed as "eco-friendly" or "sustainable" because bamboo grows quickly without pesticides, but this messaging obscures the toxic chemical processing that makes it environmentally harmful.

For plastic-free living, bamboo rayon presents the same complicated situation as regular rayon, but with more misleading marketing. While bamboo rayon is technically plastic-free and biodegradable, the production involves neurotoxic chemicals. For soft, breathable clothing, natural fibers like cotton or closed-loop alternatives like Tencel are much safer than bamboo rayon.

Activewear: Yoga pants, athletic shirts, sports bras, moisture-wicking gear

Bedding: Sheets, pillowcases, blankets, duvet covers

Bath: Towels, bathrobes, washcloths

Microplastic Concerns: Bamboo rayon does not shed microplastics. Like all rayon, it's made from regenerated plant cellulose and is fully biodegradable. When bamboo rayon fibers are released during washing, they break down into organic matter rather than persistent plastic particles. This is bamboo rayon's only significant environmental advantage over synthetic fabrics.

Chemical Safety: Bamboo rayon production uses the same toxic chemicals as regular rayon - carbon disulfide (a neurotoxin linked to neurological damage, reproductive issues, and psychiatric disorders) and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). Additionally, the harsh chemical processing likely destroys bamboo's natural antimicrobial properties (bamboo kun), meaning claims about bamboo rayon's inherent antimicrobial benefits are questionable.
