Rayon (Viscose)

Rayon, also called viscose, is a semi-synthetic fiber made from regenerated cellulose derived from wood pulp, cotton linter, or bamboo through a chemical process involving sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. T Rayon is soft, breathable, and absorbent but wrinkles easily, lacks strength when wet, and requires careful laundering, making it best suited for garments that prioritize drape and comfort over durability.

For plastic-free living, rayon is technically a plastic-free alternative, but often presents other chemical concerns. The production process uses harsh chemicals in an open-loop system that releases toxic substances into air and water, posing risks, though the final fiber itself is biodegradable and does not shed microplastics.

Apparel: Dresses, blouses, skirts, linings, scarves, shirts

Activewear: Moisture-wicking athletic clothing, yoga wear

Home Textiles: Curtains, drapes, upholstery, decorative pillows

Bedding: Sheets, blankets (less common than cotton)

Microplastic Concerns: Rayon does not shed microplastics. Despite being chemically processed, rayon is made from regenerated plant cellulose and is fully biodegradable. When rayon fibers are released during washing, they break down into organic matter rather than persistent plastic particles.

Chemical Safety: Rayon's production process is an open-loop system that releases these chemicals into air and water, often treated with formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resistant finishes, making it not a suitable alternative to plastic-based materials, even if it is not technically plastic.

Recommendations: Avoid rayon/viscose when possible in favor of natural fibers (cotton, linen, hemp) or closed-loop alternatives (Tencel/Lyocell). Avoid rayon for items worn directly against skin for extended periods (underwear, base layers, bedding) where residual chemical traces are most concerning. Consider that while rayon won't shed microplastics into your body, the production process can add potentially harmful chemicals.
